Roger Federer was able to advance to the quarterfinals at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle on Wednesday—this time without the drama.

Federer emerged unscathed from a double-break point down scenario in the third game of the match and cruised for the most part after that, notching a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Ernests Gulbis in 65 minutes to set up a quarterfinal with Florian Mayer.

Federer did not face another break point for the remainder of the match, and he snatched a break per set to keep the dangerous but all too often erratic Latvian at bay.

In the first set Federer moved ahead in the sixth game when a Gulbis forehand flew well long.

Though Gulbis, behind big serves and booming backhands, would keep pace through five service games in the second set, he cracked in his sixth. Gulbis fell behind 0-40 with loose play before saving two break points with first-strike tennis. But on the third break point he double-faulted, handing Federer the opportunity to serve for the match and his third win in five previous encounters with Gulbis.

Federer would seal the victory with a forehand winner into the open court for his 31st victory of the season. He finished with 19 winners against 13 unforced errors, winning 11 of 12 forays to the net.

The Swiss improves his career record at Halle to 48-5. He has reached the quarterfinals on all 13 appearances at the event.

Gulbis drops to 4-14 on the season.
