The victory was Groth’s first Top 20 win in nine tries. He clubbed 19 aces and won 58 of 64 first-serve points.

"Obviously, I'm pretty happy right now," said Groth, who has won challenger titles on carpet and grass in the last three months. "Grass court is probably my favorite surface. I had a pretty good season last year on it. It's definitely a surface I'm comfortable on and I've had seven good matches now. I feel like I'm finally making some big steps."

Elsewhere in Stuttgart, Gael Monfils reached the last eight by taking out Andreas Haider-Maurer, 7-6(6), 7-6(5), while Viktor Troicki edged out hometown favorite Alexander Zverev, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3.

Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber also moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz.

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal will begin his season on the grass on Thursday in Stuttgart when he faces Marcos Baghdatis. 37-year-old Tommy Haas will also be in action, facing Bernard Tomic.
