For the second time in three years, France’s Nicolas Mahut has come from qualifying to win the title at the Topshelf Open.

Mahut battled early then cruised late to take down David Goffin, 7-6(1), 6-1 on Sunday. The Frenchman had to wiggle out of a 0-40 down scenario at 4-all in the first, but after doing so he romped in the tiebreaker to take a one set to love lead.

Mahut, who also reached the doubles final this week in Holland (he paired with Pierre-Hugues Hebert and dropped the final to Ivo Karlovic and Lukasz Kubot), notched a critical break for a 2-1 lead in set two and cruised to the finish from there.

He dropped only two points on serve in the second set, and broke the Belgian three times on seven opportunities.

With the victory the 33-year-old becomes the fifth ATP player to have won a title from outside the Top 50 in 2015. He is the lowest-ranked, at No. 97, of the five.

Mahut is also the first ATP player to have won multiple titles from qualifying since Yahiya Doumbia of Senegal won in Lyon in 1988 and Bordeaux in 1995.

Mahut improves to 3-2 lifetime in finals, with all five of them coming on grass.

Goffin, who was playing at a career-high No. 15 in the ATP rankings, was bidding for his third career title.
