Tsonga, who had not played since last season’s Davis Cup final against Switzerland, ripped 11 aces and faced only one break point against the American to set up a third-round encounter with his friend and doubles partner, Gael Monfils.

“I didn't expect to play my best tennis today ever, but I'm happy the way, you know, I managed my match,” Tsonga said. “You know, I played pretty solid. I just had a little hole in the second set. But, I mean, it's normal when you didn't play since couple of months now. Hope it's going to be better and better, but for first match was already something good for me.”

In other action on Saturday at the Miami Open, Jack Sock continued his fine form by taking down 21st-seeded Fabio Fognini, 7-6(4), 6-1, to set up a third-rounder with Austria’s Dominic Thiem. It will be a first-time meeting between the two rising youngsters.

American John Isner ended the mini-run of 17-year-old Russian Andrey Rublev in straight sets to set up a potential battle with Grigor Dimitrov or Vasek Pospisil, while 4th-seeded Kei Nishikori downed another Russian, Mikhail Youzhny, 6-2, 6-1, to set up a third-round match with Viktor Troicki of Serbia.

Nishikori upset Roger Federer in Miami last year, but had to pull out of the semifinals with an injury.

14th-seeded Ernests Gulbis, who feel to Juan Monaco, and 20th-seeded Ivo Karlovic, who was dropped by Alejandro Falla, joined Fognini as seeds to fall in early play at Miami.

The other 17-year-old remaining in the draw, Germany's Alexander Zverev, was knocked off by Lukas Rosol in straight sets.
