Three Americans reached the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open, the most since 2009, on Monday.

John Isner rolled past Adrian Mannarino, 7-6(2), 6-4, while Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey both won tight three-setters to advance, over Alejandro Gonzalez and Thanasi Kokkinakis respectively.
For the first time since 2004 (Rome), American men are featuring five main draw participants at a Masters 1000 event on clay.
Donald Young, who will face Grigor Dimitrov, and Jack Sock, who will face Pablo Andujar, will see first-round action on Tuesday.
9th-seeded Marin Cilic (d. Jiri Vesely), 11th-seeded Feliciano Lopez (d. Benjamin Becker) joined 16th-seeded Isner as seeds to reach the second round.
Unseeded Fabio Fognini also advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 pounding of Santiago Giraldo, while Italy’s Luca Vanni upset Bernard Tomic, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(1). Thomaz Bellucci moved past Jeremy Chardy in straight sets while David Goffin edged Ernests Gulbis, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Gulbis dropped to 1-10 on the season with the loss.
