Maria Sharapova eased into the third round at the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Colombia’s Mariana Duque Marino. The third-seeded Russian clocked 25 winners to only 2 for Duque Marino, and converted on four of six break points to seal the victory in 73 minutes.

After falling behind 3-0 in the opener, Duque Marino saved two break points, one with a gorgeous forehand drop shot to hold for 1-3. But Sharapova raced away with the set, sealing it with a backhand crosscourt winner from inside the service line.

In the second set Sharapova took a 4-0 lead before Duque Marino managed two straight holds to stay in touch. But the defending Madrid champion would put an end to festivities when her opponent netted a return in the final game.

Kvitova d. Vandeweghe, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3

Seeking a return to form after a month-long hiatus kept her out of the American hard-court swing, the Czech won the final three games of a back-and-forth battle to overcome 32 unforced errors against only 11 winners, and will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the third round.

Azarenka d. Tomljanovic, 6-3, 6-3

The unseeded former world No. 1 broke serve four times on eleven opportunities (twice in each set) to cruise to victory in her first career encounter with the dangerous Tomljanovic. Azarenka will face Serena Williams in the third round.
