The 35-year-old moved along her bid for a 48th title by breaking six times on 11 opportunities and saving three of the four break points she faced.

The victory pushes Williams into 10th on the Road to Singapore leaderboard, and she can climb into a qualification spot with a final performance in Hong Kong.

Angelique Kerber, currently holding down the 5th slot on the leaderboard, eased past Japan’s Kurumi Nara to set up a quarterfinal with France’s Caroline Garcia.

Kerber could lock up her Singapore slot with a title in Hong Kong:

At the Tianjin Open, second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska kept up her run of fine play by defeating Wang Quiang of China, 6-1, 6-1, to set up a quarterfinal with 19-year-old Elizavata Kulichkova of Russia. Radwanska can also clinch her Singapore slot with a title in Tianjin.
