Andy Murray found himself down two sets to love before pulling out a five set comeback win on a brutally hot day at the US Open.

US Open: Young Rallies to Reach Round Three

The No. 3 seed faced a stern test early from France's Adrian Mannarino in their second round meeting. But the former US Open champion proved again why he is considered one of the fittest athletes on tour.

Murray, who admitted later in his press conference that he's dealing with a bit of head cold, was asked if he felt relief on still being in the tournament.

"Not relief. I'm proud of the way I fought. It was not an easy match to come through at all. He was making it extremely difficult for me, as well. Thought he played some really, really good tennis. He has such an unorthodox game, I didn't really feel that comfortable at many points out there in the match."

An apt observation since Murray, especially in the opening set, did not look like he was ready to either deal with his opponent or the hot and humid conditions. Meanwhile, Mannarino looked the calmer and cooler of the two as he sought only his second ever top 10 win.

Murray, unable to convert on six out of seven break point chances, soon found himself on the losing end of the first set at 7-5.

Things got worse for Murray when he lost eleven straight points to hand Mannarino a two sets to love lead.

But with Murray knowing he had the fitness and will to stay out there all day if needed, things slowly turned in his favor.

On that stage of the match Murray said, "I just wasn't able to break at any of the important moments, unfortunately. I just had to kind of tell myself that I would get there eventually. Managed to turn it round."

Going up an early break in the third set, Murray looked energized as if the match were just starting. Meanwhile, Mannarino looked unable to impose his game or find a way to close out the improbable upset.

Murray took the third set 6-1 and the fourth set 6-3.

By the time each man entered the fifth set, it was clear Murray would be the winner. Looking confident, Murray raced ahead until he found himself serving for the match. With his 21st ace of the match, Murray sealed the comeback 5-7 4-6 6-1 6-3 6-1 victory.

The win marks the eighth time in Murray's career he has comeback from two sets to love down. Having pulled off the feat before gave Murray confidence today he could do it again.

"I mean, I've come through many tough matches in my career, and I think that's why when you are behind like that in the scoreline, when you've done it in the past, you have the belief that you can come through and do it again. That definitely helped me here today."

Murray next faces Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil.
