They inhabit a very tough section of Maria Sharapova’s quarter of the draw—an unenviable place to be at this time of year, to say the least—but for the time being Carla Suarez Navarro and Angelique Kerber are looking like true contenders to go deep on the terre battue this year.

Each advanced in commanding fashion on Day 2 at Roland Garros, with Suarez Navarro notching a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Romania’s Monica Niculescu, while Kerber trounced Hungary’s Timea Babos, 6-0, 6-1.

“I think I'm much more confident indeed compared to last year,” said Suarez Navarro, who recorded her tour-leading 32nd victory of the season. “This being said, as I was playing -- when I play, I try to be more aggressive. I think I have improved my serve. I'm really trying to dominate my opponent with my serve from the very beginning… But again, one of the big differences between this year versus last year is mentally. I think I'm quite self-confident, and I know what I'm doing.”

Suarez Navarro, who hasn’t lost to anybody ranked outside the top 5 on clay this spring and was edged out in the Rome final by Maria Sharapova in three sets, will face Kerber in the round of 16 if the seeds hold.

Kerber thumped Babos today, summoning the form that took her to consecutive titles on clay earlier this spring. The German won Charleston on the green clay of the U.S., before heading over to Stuttgart to win the title with an epic run that saw her defeat Maria Sharapova, Ekaterina Makarova and Caroline Wozniacki.

Today she hit 16 winners against 12 unforced errors and broke serve on 6 of 7 opportunities, to set up a second-round encounter with Ajla Tomljanovic.

In other early results on Sunday in Paris, Alize Cornet came back to defeat Roberta Vinci on Court Philippe Chatrier, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, while Elina Svitolina and Sabine Lisicki also advanced.
