An anticipated first-time meeting at the BMW Open by FWU AG in Munich between rising stars went the way of one of the hottest players on tour.

Now Dominic Thiem will go after his third title in his red-hot season.

WTA: Safarova Wins First Title of Year in Prague

Thiem faced off against local favorite Germany’s own Alexander Zverev in Saturday’s semifinal. Early on, it appeared Zverev might just find a way to reach the final.

The No. 8 seed Zverev, who took hold of an early service break, went on to take the first set 6-4.

Thiem turned things around in the second set. The third seed secured his own early break for 3-1 thanks to a Zverev forehand error. Though Thiem tossed in several double faults in his next service game, he managed to hold serve for 5-2.

A fun drop shot exchange between both men in the next game went the way of Thiem who then held a set point. Zverev erased that with a smash winner but soon faced another set point against him. Thiem converted this time when Zverev netted a backhand.

The final set proved tense early on in the opening games. Zverev quickly fell behind a break point on his serve. Thiem, during an extended rally, landed a forehand just on the line. Zverev complained loudly to the umpire to no avail as Thiem took the lead 2-0.

Both players traded breaks again, but it was Thiem who finally took control of the final set with solid play especially from his one-handed backhand. Up 5-2, and on match point, Thiem served an ace to seal the 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.

With the victory, Thiem earned his 29th match win of the season giving him the most of any player on tour passing World No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

Thiem will face in Sunday’s final another German and former event winner Philipp Kohlschreiber. The fourth seed Kohlschreiber defeated No. 5 seed Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-4.
