US Open Roof

The top stories we're following ahead of Day 1 of the 2016 U.S. Open.

Here’s what we have been reading on the day before the U.S. Open begins:

Roger Federer will miss the U.S. Open for the first time this century.

Yeah, major bummer. But thanks to Brian Phillips, who penned this thoughtfully written piece on the maestro for the New York Times, we can still contemplate the meaning of it all as it pertains to Federer. Here's the first paragraph, to get you excited:

He heard a click. That was how Roger Federer discovered the knee injury that cost him most of his 2016 season. He was running a bath for his daughters — and since he is Roger Federer, we have to assume he was running a gorgeous bath, possibly the greatest bath of all time, perfect temperature, immaculate bubbles, faint scent of lavender, business as usual.

Nice write-up of the Laver Cup by Aussie sportswriter Linda Pearce.

Pearce writes: “If the Laver Cup were played next week rather than next September, when its inauguration has been shoe-horned into a crowded tennis calendar, a strong European team potentially featuring Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray would be favoured to beat a rest-of-the-world outfit headed by Milos Raonic and, perhaps, Nick Kyrgios. So. Would anyone care?”

Well?

Venus Williams featured in New York Times for Off-Court Endeavors

So many great US Open preview pieces, so little time. Here’s an off-beat, fashion forward feature on Venus Williams (some great photography inside as well).

Hard Feelings Persist Between Bouchard and the USTA

Here’s Yahoo Canada’s Stephanie Myles on the ramped-up rhetoric (we knew this had to become news again in New York, right?)

“The USTA does not comment on the substance of ongoing litigation. However, it is truly unfortunate that a year after her accident, Genie’s focus is on matters other than playing to her best ability. … We have remained ready, willing and able to bring the litigation to a conclusion as expeditiously as is possible."

N.Y. Post Features CoCo Vandeweghe:

Interesting read (and photos) on American CoCo Vandeweghe. Thought it might be a little more controversial based on the headline, but that's the Post for ya. Liked this quote from Mary Joe Fernandez: “She’s got a big game and one of the best serves out there. A lot of people need to win matches to be confident. She’s confident, and that’s why she wins matches.”

Johanna Konta on Celebrity, or Lack Thereof

Johanna Konta is back in New York, and this time she’s a more recognizable figure. But not by much. Simon Briggs of the Telegraph profiles the British No. 1.

Djokovic is Electric!

More from Briggs: Novak Djokovic using an “electricity treatment?”

Last but not least

Jon Wertheim’s 44 tips for U.S. Open attendees. Here’s a good one:

If you walk by a scoring console and see that a match is deep in the fifth set (or third set for women), watch the conclusion, regardless of whether you've heard of either player. It will give you a good sense of just how brutal tennis can be.
