The 13th-ranked Croatian will face veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber for a semifinal spot. Cilic shared his thoughts on his performance and his quest to return to the Rotterdam final for the second time in three years.
The 32-year-old Kohlschreiber beat Croatian qualifier Ivan Dodig 6-4, 6-2 in 70 minutes to become the first man into the last eight.
Kohlschreiber has won five of eight meetings with Cilic. The pair have not played since the German scored a straight-sets win on red clay in the 2012 Munich final.
German wild card Alexander Zverev was a 7-5, 6-2 victor over Vasek Pospisil.
Zverev will play either third-seeded Gilles Simon or Robin Haase for a place in the quarterfinals.
