Wednesday was a day of upsets sprinkled with some young gun optimism at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel. The top two seeds in Acapulco were both bounced from the draw while a rising American youngster continued his startling rise.

Alexandr Dolgopolov set the tone for a stunning day of tennis with his command performance against David Ferrer. The Ukrainian knocked off the four-time and defending champion, 6-4, 6-4. Dolgopolov was in top form from start to finish, hitting 22 winners and converting on three of ten break points against Ferrer.

Though he struggled to make first serves (44 percent on the day), when Dolgopolov did find the box he was effective, winning 25 of 29 such points and saving two of the three break points he faced.

"I think everything suits me here. I’ve played well here on clay courts, I’ve played well here on hard courts and that’s why I’m coming back here and enjoying myself. It’s great to get wins like this," Dolgopolov told ATPWorldTour.com.

The Ukranian improves to 3-8 versus Ferrer with the win and gets his ninth career top-10 win against 36 losses.

He will face Robin Haase in the quarterfinals.

Second-seeded Kei Nishikori was also sent packing, 6-4, 6-3, by hard-serving American Sam Querrey. Not known for his returning, Querrey earned ten break points in nine Nishikori service games, converting three.

He pitched in 8 aces and dropped only four first-serve points in snapping a nine-match losing streak against the top-10 that had lasted since 2013.

Querrey will face fast-rising 18-year-old American Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals. Fritz, who shocked the world when he became the youngest American to reach an ATP final since 1989 in Memphis, raced past Victor Estrella Burgos, 6-1, 6-3. Fritz averaged 1.5 break opportunities per Estrella Burgos service game, and faced only one break point in reaching his second quarterfinal in three weeks.
