Dominika Cibulkova

Dominika Cibulkova edged Agnieszka Radwanska in a three-hour thriller on Day 8. We chronicle the social media buzz for you here.

They had already gone the distance in their three previous matches in 2016, so it wasn’t really surprising that Dominika Cibulkova and Agnieszka Radwanska pushed each other to the limits on Day 8 as they battled for a spot in the quarterfinals, but the level that the rivals achieved during the Slovakian’s 6-3, 5-7, 9-7 victory went above and beyond.

Radwanska saved a match point in the tenth game of set two and went on to force a decider. From there the caliber of tennis went notch-by-notch higher, the fervor of the crowd grew more intense and the weight of the moment heavier with each passing window of opportunity.

The high drama of the third was sustained, as Cibulkova saved a match point of her own to hold for 6-6.

“I think was a great match, better and better,” a disappointed Radwanska told reporters after the match. “I think every set was better than the other one. Of course, I had a chance with match point.”

Cibulkova would fail to convert another match point before finally closing the match with her 56th forehand winner.

Meanwhile, the buzz on social media grew throughout the three-hour battle. Here’s a sampling of this very positive reaction to this match:
