Gael Monfils, last week’s title winner at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., stayed scorching-hot with a three-set win over David Goffin, while Grigor Dimitrov reached his first quarterfinal since May with a straight-sets takedown of Ivo Karlovic.

Monfils has now won eight matches in a row, but he’ll be facing a stiff challenge on Friday when he faces fourth-seeded Milos Raonic. Raonic walloped American Jared Donaldson, 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday to improve his hard court record to 19-3 this season. The Frenchman owns a 2-2 lifetime record against Raonic but the Canadian has taken both of their meetings in 2016.

Monfils fell behind 4-0 in the first-set tiebreak but won seven of the next eight points to take the opener.

After Goffin took the middle set decisively, Monfils quickly took the opening two games of the decider.

But Goffin battled back to four-all before Monfils snatched the final two games, converting his second match point to claim to reach his fourth Masters 1000 quarterfinal of 2016.

Monfils finished with 31 winners and 13 aces against 32 unforced errors on the day.

Dimitrov’s struggles have been well-documented this season, but the Bulgarian is taking a respite from the hardship in Toronto. He moved past Ivo Karlovic, 6-3, 7-5, behind 14 aces and 43 of 48 first-serve points won.

Since snapping a six-match losing streak at Wimbledon, Dimitrov has won five of his last seven.

Dimitrov will square off with third-seeded Kei Nishikori in the quarterfinals. Nishikori leads the pair’s head-to-head 2-0 but they have not met in over two years.
