The fourth-seeded Fognini swept unseeded Slovak Andrej Martin, 6-4, 6-1, in the Umag final to collect his fourth career title.

"It's the final. Both players had nothing to lose," said Fognini, the first Italian champion in Umag history. "For me there was everything to win because I was the favorite. I think I improved my game in the second set.

"I have to be happy. A title is always a title. It was a great week of tennis."

It is Fognini's first singles title in more than two years.

His last championship came in February, 2014 when Fognini defeated Leonardo Mayer in the Vina del Mar title match.

Fognini won 11 of 15 points played on his second serve and did not face a break point in the 68-minute victory.

Contesting his first career ATP final, the 124th-ranked Martin had won 76 percent of his service games entering the final, but Fognini converted three of six break points in the straight-sets win.

"Right now, it doesn't feel so good, but over time I will appreciate what I did this week," Martin said. "For me, it's been a great experience."

The 39th-ranked Italian improved his finals record to 4-7.
