Fognini swerved into his second semifinal of 2016 by winning 29 of 44 return points in sets two and three. The Italian blitzed Dzumhur in the final set, winning 16 of 20 on return and breaking four times on six opportunities to clinch his victory in 85 minutes.

Fognini will square off against red-hot Gastao Elias of Portugal in the semis. The 25-year-old broke six times on ten opportunities to take down Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta, and has now reached back-to-back semifinals.

Elias’ compatriot Joao Sousa was not so lucky. He fell to world No.124 Andrej Martin, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, while Carlos Berlocq stormed past third-seeded Jeremy Chardy, 6-3, 6-2.

Martin, who saved five match point to defeat Martin Klizan on Thursday, is into his first career ATP semifinal.

Elias also saved a match point on Thursday when he defeated top-seeded and defending champion Pablo Cuevas.
