Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard notched a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Danka Kovinic in the first match of the day at Mallorca, saving the only break point she faced and winning 31 of 41 first-serve points to book a second-round match with Anastasija Sevastova.

After closing out the opener without facing a break point, eighth-seeded Bouchard fell behind 5-2 in set two before rallying to win the final five games.

Top-seeded GarbiƱe Muguruza, playing in her first match since winning Roland Garros, was not so lucky. The Spaniard was upset by Kirsten Flipkens, 6-3, 6-4. Flipkens kept Muguruza off-balance all day with a steady attack which was buoyed by her penetrating forehand. Flipkens converted all three break points she faced and did a great job of not getting dominated by Muguruza’s first serve. She won 13 of 32 points against the Spaniard’s first offering to snap a 10-match losing streak against the Top 10.

Flipkens last win against a Top 10 player came in the 2013 Wimbledon quarterfinals when she upset Petra Kvitova.

In other action on Tuesday in Mallorca, Sabine Lisicki upset fourth-seeded Kristina Mladenovic. The 2013 Wimbledon finalist saved both break points she faced and won 28 of 32 first-serve points against last week’s runner-up at ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic knocked off Croatia’s Ana Konjuh, 7-6, 6-3, while 5th-seeded Yulia Putintseva was defeated by Sorana Cirstea, 6-3, 6-2.

Seventh-seeded Laura Siegemund, Monica Puig, Elise Mertens, Sara Sorribes Tormo and Anna-Lena Friedsam were also winners.
