Rafael Nadal has pulled out of Wimbledon, saying that his injured left wrist won’t be healed in time enough to make a run for a third title at the Championships in 2016.

“I’m sad to announce that after talking to my doctors, and receiving the results of my last medical revision, I won’t be able to play at Wimbledon this year,” Nadal wrote on his Facebook page. “As you can all imagine, it’s a very tough decision, but the injury I suffered at Roland Garros needs time to heal. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to join in the pre-tournament event #TheBoodles at #StokePark that I attended in previous years. Thank you all for your support, especially my fans. Your kind messages mean so much to me.”

The 2008 and 2010 Wimbledon champion owns a 29-8 record with two titles in 2016. He was beginning a surge on the clay, winning titles in Barcelona and Monte-Carlo, but after injuring his left wrist in Madrid and playing through the pain in Rome, he had to withdrawal at Roland Garros after two rounds.

Nadal had been receiving wrist injections but the pain continued to worsen after two rounds in Paris. “Angel (Nadal’s doctor) says he cannot inject anesthetics into my wrist for five more games,” Nadal said in Paris. “He says it's impossible. I needed five more matches. But if my wrist cannot withstand five more matches, I simply cannot play.”

Nadal has a damaged extensor carpi ulnaris tendon and is still hoping to heal the injury without surgery. Experts believe that he will face a recovery period of at least four to six weeks.
