Tomas Berdych extended American Steve Johnson’s losing streak against the Top-10 to 13 matches by edging the 26-year-old, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3, to reach the round of 16 at the Miami Open.

Berdych, a 2010 runner-up in Miami, had a match point in the second-set tiebreaker but Johnson held firm to force a decider.

Johnson nearly took the advantage in the decider but squandered two break points in the first game of the third set.

Berdych saved all ten break points he faced on the day and broke critically in the fourth game of the final set before closing out the hard-fought victory in two hours and 43 minutes.

Berdych has reached the semifinals in the last two years at Miami.

Dominic Thiem was also a winner on Sunday in Miami. The 22-year-old Austrian dominated Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka, 6-2, 6-2. Thiem was a quarterfinalist last year at Miami and improved his record at the event to 7-2 with the win.

The No. 14 seed didn’t face a break point in the 64-minute contest and will face either Novak Djokovic or Joao Sousa in the round of 16.

15th-seeded David Goffin, who defeated Viktor Troicki, 6-1, 6-1, and lucky loser Horacio Zeballos, who ousted Fernando Verdasco, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(4), also advanced.

Zeballos will face Goffin in the round of 16.

Berdych will face either Richard Gasquet or Benoit Paire.
