Novak Djokovic manned his battle stations and shot down his first of what he hopes to be seven opponents in Paris on Tuesday. The Serb started slow but eventually waltzed past Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, to book a second-round encounter with Belgium’s Steve Darcis.

Milestone: Djokovic Becomes Fifth Player to Reach 200 Weeks at No. 1

“I have to get myself engaged,” said Djokovic. “Get used to the conditions, the new court, new tournament. Second and third set were really good—I thought I found my rhythm. I’ll take the positives out of it and I’m hoping I can progress as the tournament goes on."

Djokovic struck 35 winners against 22 unforced errors and only faced one break point. He improves to 2-0 against Lu, who has only played one tournament this year following an elbow surgery in January.

Djokovic is bidding to become the eighth male in history to win all four majors. He is a three-time finalist at Roland Garros and owns a career record of 49-11 on the terre battue.

This year marks the fifth time that Djokovic has tried to complete the Career Slam in Paris.

“It's not the first time this year that I'm experiencing such anticipation and expectations," Djokovic said. "As a matter of fact, I think it's been now a few years in a row that is a very similar situation where I'm approaching this tournament as one of the favourites and obviously people wonder if this is the year or not. I wonder myself.”

Djokovic owns a 2-0 lifetime edge over Darcis. The Belgian Defeated Turkey’s Marsel Ilhan, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 on Tuesday.
