Garbiñe Muguruza soaked up the sun—and a victory—early on Day 6 at Roland Garros to book her place in the second week. The 4th-seeded Spaniard dismantled Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer, 6-3. 6-0, and is beginning to look like a real threat to produce another breakthrough performance on the terre battue.

More important, she’s warming to the task.

“Today is a perfect day,” Muguruza told reporters after victory. “You know, you go to warm up. Perfect sun. Then you go to the court, it's beautiful. I don't know. It brings energy also to see that it's a nice day.”

The energy all flowed in one direction as Muguruza clocked 19 winners against 11 unforced errors and converted on all six of her break point opportunities, winning 14 of 17 points against the world No. 54.

Muguruza has now won six of her last seven matches and will face either Svetlana Kuznetsova or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the round of 16.

“The more matches you get to play, the more you realize that winning time and again is possible,” she said. “And with that confidence, you can actually organize your game, your game play. Winning matches is what I want, but of course from now on I'm just going to play things match by match.”

Halep Squeezes Past Naomi Osaka

The youngest player remaining in the draw was ousted by former Roland Garros up and sixth-seeded Simona Halep on Day 6. Halep blew a 4-2 lead in the opener against the hard-hitting Japanese teenager, but she rallied to claim the final two sets, reeling off the final three games to close out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

“For sure I think I had opportunities, because I did win the first set,” said Osaka, who reached the third round on her Roland Garros debut. “I don't think I really enforced my game on her, and I was making too many unforced errors.”

Halep finished with 23 winners and 22 unforced errors in the match, while Osaka hit 26 winners against 38 unforced. The Romanian will face either Sam Stosur or Lucie Safarova in the round of 16.

Irina-Camelia Begu became the second Romanian to reach the round of 16 about an hour later. The 25-year-old defeated Annika Beck in three sets.
