Agnieszka Radwanska greatly increased her chances of reaching the last four at the WTA Finals with a 7-6(1), 6-3 win over GarbiƱe Muguruza on Day 4 at Singapore, and knocked the Spaniard out of contention in the process.

Radwanska committed just 12 unforced errors to 37 for Muguruza in the 96-minute match, and she played her usual vintage ninja tennis, throwing up plenty of lobs, angles and slice to keep Muguruza off balance for much of the encounter. After pulling out of a tight first set the Pole cruised a bit in the second set and eventually pulled away from 3-all, winning the final three games and finally converting her first match point with a clean backhand winner down the line to improve to 4-4 against the Spaniard.

Muguruza served for an up-and-down first set but Radwanska’s timely tennis enabled her to level up and take the set with a solid tiebreaker.

“Of course, great memories from last year,” said defending champion Radwanska, who has now won two straight against Muguruza. “I really love the crowd and I was really feeling good on court from two years ago.”

Radwanska becomes the fourth active WTA player to have earned 10 wins at the prestigious year-end championships with the win, but she needs another win to reach the semis in Singapore as the winner of Friday’s match between Radwanska and Karolina Pliskova will claim second place in the White Group. Svetlana Kuznetsova, who improved to 2-0 in Singapore with a three-set win over Karolina Pliskova, has already advanced to the semifinals as a result of Muguruza’s loss.

Muguruza drops to 3-3 lifetime at Singapore with the loss. She won her first three matches last year before falling to Radwanska in a three-set semifinal.

The Spaniard finishes the season with a 34-20 record and her maiden Grand Slam title, which she won at Roland Garros this spring.

Radwanska improves to 52-17 on the season and 42-11 on hardcourts. The Pole owns a 6-0 lifetime record against Pliskova.
