Angelique Kerber’s quest for an elusive first title of 2017 has moved south of the border. The German reached the quarterfinals at the Abierto Monterrey Afirme on Thursday, defeating Luxembourg’s Mandy Minella, 6-1, 6-3.

The top seed needed just 58 minutes to roll to victory. She only dropped nine points on serve and did not face a break point.
Kerber moves on to face Heather Watson, who stormed past Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova, 6-4, 6-1, earlier on Thursday.
Other winners to reach the quarterfinals on Thursday were seventh-seeded Alizé Cornet, who defeated Donna Vekic, 6-3, 6-4, and fourth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro, who defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo, 6-2, 6-0.
