Petra Kvitova rolled into the second-round of the Rogers Cup with an impressive straight sets victory over Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-1, 7-6(5).

Watch: Kasatkina's Moment of Perfection

The Czech, coming off a quarterfinal showing at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, improved to 9-3 on the season and 6-5 lifetime against Suarez Navarro. She had dropped four in a row to the Spaniard, and had not defeated her in more than four years.

It was one of the reasons that the win felt meaningful for Kvitova.

Another big reason was the fact that she overcame a 4-1 deficit in the second set to win in straights.

“It was just one break down,” Kvitova said after her win, according to WTATennis.com. “Every game we played in the second set was very close. I just tried to count the points and not really see the score.”

Kvitova’s victory sets up a second-round clash with Sloane Stephens. The American battled back to defeat Yulia Putintseva, 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-4.

The victory marks Stephens’ first win of the season.

Stephens underwent left foot surgery in February and did not play a tour-level match in nearly a year. She lost on her return at Wimbledon, and again last week when she faced Simona Halep in her first match at the Citi Open.

Elsewhere in Toronto, No.11-seeded Dominika Cibulkova (d. Tsurenko) and No.15-seeded Anastasija Sevastova (d. Davis) were winners, while No.12-seeded Jelena Ostapenko (l. Lepchenko) and No.13-seeded Kristina Mladenovic (l. Strycova) were knocked out.
