No.4-seeded Elina Svitolina reached the third round early on Day 4 at the U.S. Open with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina. The Ukrainian improved to 47-10 on the season and advanced the third round at the U.S. Open for the third time.

She is one of six players still in the running to claim the No.1 ranking at the conclusion of the U.S. Open fortnight.
Svitolina will bid for her first appearance in week two of the U.S. Open when she meets either Shelby Rogers or Daria Gavrilova in the third round.
Ostapenko, Osaka Advance
2017 Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko came into the U.S. Open on a three-match losing streak, but she’s into the third round after a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sorana Cirstea. The Latvian reached the third round at the U.S. Open for the first time and improved to 14-2 at the majors this season. She has reached at least the third round at all four majors for the first time in her career.
Japan’s Naomi Osaka also advanced. She moved past Denisa Allertova, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, to reach the third round at the U.S. Open for the second straight year. Osaka will face qualifier Kaia Kanepi in the third round. Kanepi powered past Yanina Wickmayer, 6-4, 6-2.
