Juan Martin del Potro started his season a little bit later than the rest of the tour, at the same place where he began his comeback from his third left wrist surgery last season.

The result was similar to his first match of 2016—a tentative but ultimately solid and successful first-round win.

Del Potro got by South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, 6-4, 6-4, to book his spot in the second round where he will meet Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia.

Del Potro needed just one break in each set, and converted his fifth break chance of the match for a 4-3 lead in the first set and took his first break chance for a 2-1 lead in the second set.

Anderson, a former Top-10 player like Del Potro and the 2012 champion at Delray Beach, dropped to 0-2 on the season, following an first-round loss last week in Memphis.
