Nicolas Mahut is a dangerous player on a fast indoor court and he proved that on Tuesday against a young gun at the Open 13 Provence in Marseille.

Mahut defeated Germany’s 19-year-old sensation Alexander Zverev, 7-6(5), 7-6(5), to set up a second-round tilt with Norbert Gombos of Slovakia.

35-year-old Mahut is making his 11th appearance at Marseille and he notched his 18th win against Top-20 competition to improve to 4-4 on the season. It was the two-time doubles major champion’s first meeting with Zverev.

Both players dropped serve once in the second set.

Earlier in the evening session, Richard Gasquet rallied past Robin Haase in three sets to set a second-round clash with Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny.

Another 35-year-old Frenchman, Julien Benneteau, also took out a #NextGen member by defeating Canada’s Denis Shapovalov to set up a quarterfinal with Gilles Simon.
