10 Stats to Get you Primed for Wimbledon’s Day 5

See the Complete Day 5 OOP Here

1. 143

The fastest serve recorded at these Championships through two rounds (singles only). And the winner is… Nikoloz Basilashvili.

2. 1986

For the first time since 1986, two British women have reached the third round at Wimbledon. And, for the first time since 1997 four Brits (men and women combined, adding Andy Murray and Aljaz Bedene) have made the third round. All four in action today – it’s a big day for British tennis.

3. 45/55

Gilles Muller has been very impressive at serve-and-volley at the Championships. Through two rounds he has converted over 80 percent of his forays.

4. 2

Number of teenagers to reach the third round at Wimbledon. Ana Konjuh (19 years, 201 days) and Naomi Osaka (19 years, 273 days) are both in action today.

5. 31 percent

Nobody has hit a greater percentage of winners to total ground strokes than Italy’s Fabio Fognini. Fabio has cracked 108 winners out of 344 groundies. That 31 percent number is higher than Marin Cilic (29 percent) and John Isner (27 percent). Here’s how the big four stacks up percent-wise: 1. Djokovic (23) 2. Nadal (21) 3. Federer (20) 4. Murray (20).

6. 37

At 37, Venus Williams is the oldest singles player remaining in either singles draw. She’s actually five years older than the next-oldest woman (Kuznetsova, 32) on the women’s side. There are only three women aged 30 or older still alive in the women’s singles draw. China’s Peng Shuai (31) is the other.

7. 50

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson is bidding for his 50th Grand Slam win on Day 5. He’d become the 7th man from his country to crack the milestone if he defeats Ruben Bemelmans today.

1994

Sticking with the age-centric rundown, Venus Williams is bidding for an impressive feat of longevity on Day 5. She’ll become the oldest week two participant on the women’s side at Wimbledon since 1994 if she defeats teenager Naomi Osaka.

9. 25, 36

Rafael Nadal is on a tear right now. He has won 25 consecutive completed sets at majors, which leaves him one straight-sets win from tying his all-time personal best of 28, which was set in 2010.

10. Other must-see third-rounders

Here’s a list of other matches we’ll be keeping tabs on:

[13] Jelena Ostapenko vs. Camila Giorgi, third on, No.3 Court (because this will be an absolute slugfest between to fiery phenoms).

[6] Johanna Konta vs. Maria Sakkari, second on, No.1 Court (to see how the blossoming Brit handles the pressure of gunning for what would be a huge milestone personally for her).

[1] Andy Murry vs. [28] Fabio Fognini, third on, Centre Court (because Fognini is a wild card and he’s clearly warming to the conditions at Wimbledon this season. Could be a close match).

[4] Elina Svitolina vs. Carina Witthoeft, second on, No.3 Court (The fourth-seeded Ukrainian is totally under the radar this week. This is Svitolina’s first appearance at Wimbledon’s third round and Witthoeft is back in the round of 32 for the second year in a row. Is the German a sleepy-good grass-courter?)

Enjoy the tennis!
