Kiki Bertens and Anett Kontaveit powered into the semifinals on Friday at the Ladies Championships Gstaad.

Second-seeded Kiki Bertens improved to 21-6 on clay in 2017 with a 6-4, 6-4, win over No.5 seed and good friend Johanna Larsson on Friday at the Ladies Championship Gstaad.

Bertens took a 5-3 lead in the opener but could not serve the set out despite a 30-0 lead in the next game. But Bertens broke to win the second set and raced out to a 3-0 lead in set two.

Larsson got back on serve again but Bertens broke her to clinch the match in the 10th game of set two, closing affairs in one hour and 34 minutes.

No.3-seeded Anett Kontaveit improved to 15-5 on clay in 2017 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Germany’s Carina Witthoeft. The Estonian will move on to face Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic. Martincova defeated Germany’s Antionia Lottner, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 to reach her first semifinal of 2017.

Bertens, who also advanced to the doubles semifinal in Gstaad alongside Larsson, will face Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo in the semifinals.
