Roger Federer fought his way past a spirited Roberto Bautista Agut to reach the Miami Open quarterfinals on Tuesday, 7-6(2), 7-6(4).

Federer improves his lifetime record at Miami to 47-13 and 16-1 overall in 2017, and will face Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals.

Federer’s compatriot Stan Wawrinka, playing on Grandstand at the same time, was not so lucky. He could not contend with 19-year-old German Alexander Zverev and squandered an early lead to fall 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Zverev, who saved three match points to defeat John Isner on Monday, is into the last eight at a Masters 1000 event for the first time. He will face the winner of tonight’s match between Nick Kyrgios and David Goffin.

Federer has reached the semifinals at Miami for the first time since 2011. The Swiss is making his 14th appearance in Key Biscayne and he reached his first of 43 career Masters 1000 finals here in 2002. He won the title in 2005 and 2006.

He was pushed to his limits on Tuesday and had to engineer a late break after he dropped serve in the ninth game of the opener. Bautista Agut, who played some magnificent tennis, played his most regrettable game when he served for the opening set. He did not win a single point and tossed in his only double fault of the day on break point.

The two traded holds in the next two games before Federer took control of the tiebreaker.

Bautista Agut saved five of six break points in the second set and broke Federer once to get things to another tiebreaker but again it was Federer who came out on top.

The Swiss has won 16 consecutive sets and six consecutive tiebreakers since falling to Evgeny Donskoy in Dubai in February.
