Elina Svitolina reached the Rome final as a result of Garbiné Muguruza’s injury withdrawal on Saturday at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. The Ukrainian, who leads the WTA Tour with 30 wins and three titles this year, was leading 4-1 when Muguruza pulled the plug due to a neck injury.
The Spaniard later told reporters that she injured the neck during practice while warming up with her practice partner.
No.8-seeded Svitolina will face No.6-seeded Simona Halep in the final. Halep has won both previous meetings between the pair but they have not met since Fed Cup in 2014.
With a win Svitolina would move into the Top spot in the Porsche Road to Singapore standings. She will also return to the Top 10 next week (currently 11).
