The Austrian was down a break in the third set and also down three match points with Dimitrov holding a 6-3 lead in the third-set breaker. Thiem saved all three and then another two match points before converting his second to notch a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(9) win over the Bulgarian.

Thiem will next face lucky loser Borna Coric. The Croatian became the first lucky loser to reach the quarterfinals in Madrid Open history when he defeated World No.1 Andy Murray, 6-3, 6-3.

Thiem improves to 24-10 on the season and 12-2 on clay with his victory. He is now 2-1 lifetime against Dimitrov, who drops to 19-7 on the season and 2-3 on clay.

Alexander Zverev was also a winner on Thursday. The 20-year-old German reaches the quarterfinals in Madrid on his debut with a 6-4, 6-4 win over No.11-seeded Tomas Berdych.

Zverev has now won two in a row against the Czech after dropping his first four.

He’ll move on to face Pablo Cuevas. The Uruguayan reached his third Masters 1000 quarterfinal of 2017 by easing past Benoit Paire 7-5, 0-6, 6-1.

Cuevas had failed to reach the quarterfinals in his first 28 Masters 1000 appearances and has now reached three of his last four (Indian Wells, Monte-Carlo, Madrid).

The quarterfinals are all set in Madrid. Other winners on Thursday include No.9-seeded David Goffin (d. Raonic) No.6-seeded Kei Nishikori (d. Ferrer), No.2-seeded Novak Djokovic (d. Lopez) and No.4-seeded Rafael Nadal (d. Kyrgios).
