They started the year with a bang, and they finished it with one as well. Henri Kontinen and John Peers knocked off the ATP’s year-end No.1 tandem of Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo, 6-4, 6-2, to become the first team to repeat at the #NittoATPFinals since Bob and Mike Bryan in 2004.

The Aussie-Finn pairing capped off a solid week with a brilliant performance in the final and improved their record to 5-0 in finals and 10-1 lifetime.

Kontinen and Peers saved all three break points they faced and lost just three first-serve points in the match. They broke to move ahead 3-2 in the first set and ten of the final fourteen games.

“I thought every match we played here, we've played better and better as the week as gone on. It's nice to come back and defend our title. Yeah, it feels good to go on holidays after a win,” Peers told reporters after the victory.

Peers and Kontinen now lead Kubot and Melo 4-1 in the lifetime head-to-head.

"Maybe we fire up a bit more playing them. I think they're a really tough team," Kontinen said of Kubot and Melo. "We always know playing this team, pretty much all the teams in this tournament, we're going to have to play our best to win. Luckily we were able to do that today."
