Nicolas Mahut was not selected for this weekend’s Davis Cup final in Lille, France. Instead French Captain Yannick Noah has elected to go with Richard Gasquet, along with Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Lucas Pouille and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Noah made the surprise decision based on his belief that Gasquet and Herbert could handle the doubles together.

It’s an interesting decision because Herbert will likely have to play the right side with Gasquet, a partner that he isn’t nearly as experienced with, for the doubles rubber on Saturday.

Herbert has never played alongside any of the other three nominated French players in doubles.

The move will certainly give France more singles depth if they need it, with Gasquet able to slip in if either Gasquet or Pouille falters or is injured.

"I don't want to speak about the players who are not there," Noah said. "It does not mean that I don't think about them. Now we have a goal to achieve, the final starts tomorrow. I have four players ready to do their best and defend our colors."

There were no surprises on the Belgian side. The 2015 runner-ups counter with David Goffin, Steve Darcis, Ruben Bemelmans and Joris de Loore.
