Fourth seed and last year’s runner-up Diego Schwartzman needed one hour and 41 minutes to defeat American Ernesto Escobedo to reach his 10th quarterfinal of the season at the European Open in Antwerp, Belgium. It has been a remarkable season for the Argentine, who reached his first major quarterfinal at this year's U.S. Open and his first two Masters 1000 quarterfinals at Monte-Carlo and Montreal.

The 25-year-old World No.26 (currently at a career-high ranking) will face No.5-seeded David Ferrer for a spot in the semis.

Ferrer defeated Belgium’s Steve Darcis, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 on Thursday.

Schwartzman took the only previous meeting with Ferrer this March at Miami.

In other action on Thursday top-seeded David Goffin moved past American Frances Tiafoe, 7-6(1), 6-2, while No.2-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took out his compatriot Kenny Deschepper, 6-4, 6-3.

Tsonga will face Julien Benneteau next while Goffin will square off with Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 19-year-old reached his first ATP quarterfinal when Ivo Karlovic was forced to retire with Tsitsipas leading, 7-6(4), 5-6.
