The Aussies will need Nick Kyrgios and Alex de Minaur to come through in reverse singles on Sunday.

“I knew that my guys knew each other pretty well,” German captain Michael Kohlmann said of his tandem. “And in Davis Cup it’s not only about the tennis, is also about how you put your emotions together, how you connect together and in this part I had a feeling that my guys connect better together.”

Germany’s top-ranked player, World No. 5 Alexander Zverev, will lead off Sunday's reverse singles against 14th-ranked Kyrgios. It is one of the more highly anticipated rubbers of the young Davis Cup season.

“That was the match everybody was hoping for, everybody was talking about. Now we might see it,’’ said Kohlmann.

De Minaur is slated to face Jan-Lennard Struff if a fifth and decisive rubber is played.

“Strategy’s easy: we’ve got to win both matches tomorrow,'' Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt said. “We’re a long way from beaten, that’s for sure. Tomorrow’s gonna be a big day and the boys will be up for it and we’re going to look forward to this challenge.”

Italy Move Closer to Victory in Japan

Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini defeated Ben Machlachlan and Uchiyama Yasutaka, 7-5, 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-5, to put Italy on the brink of advancing in Morioka.

Thanks to the 2015 Australian Open doubles champions, Italy is now in the driver’s seat after 14 sets and more than 11 hours of tennis in Japan.

Fognini is slated to face Yuichi in the first reverse doubles rubber, with Andreas Seppi slated to face Taro Daniel. A fatigued Fognini isn’t sure he’ll be ready, however. “If I’m honest I’m tired, I played nine sets and eight hours in two days,” Fognini said after the win. “We’ll see how I am when I wake up before deciding.”
