Karen Khachanov battled from a set down to edge David Ferrer in first-round action at the Open Sud de France. The 21-year-old improves to 4-2 on the season by winning his first ever battle with the 32-year-old Spaniard.

Khachanov, who reached the quarterfinals at Auckland and the second round at the Australian Open, has only lost to Juan Martin del Potro in 2018.

He saved five of seven break points on the day, and did not face a break point in the decisive set. The Russian fired 11 aces in 16 service games, including 5 aces in five service games in the third set.

Gilles Simon (d. Maden) and Jeremy Chardy (d. Tsitsipas) kept the French faithful happy with opening-round victories, while Ricardas Berankis (d. Benneteau) and Carlos Taberner (d. Gombos) also advanced.
