It was a difficult night for Del Potro, who let slip a 3-0 lead and failed to convert four sets in the opener, before rallying to force a decider against the 20-year-old.

Del Potro would save a match point at 4-5 in the third, then another two at 5-6, but Tiafoe finished the match moments later to secure his first career victory over Del Potro in three tries.

The American will face No.8-seeded Hyeon Chung in the quarterfinals. The South Korean, who defeated Franko Skugor in straight sets on Thursday, is the only seeded player remaining in the draw.

Earlier on Thursday Denis Shapovalov battled past American Jared Donaldson, 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4, to reach his first quarterfinal of the season. He’ll face Taylor Fritz in Friday’s quarterfinal. The American defeated Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
