New year, new look, same dominance.

Roger Federer began his Aussie Open title defense in convincing fashion, sailing past Aljaz Bedene, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

The Swiss was never troubled, and improves to 88-13 lifetime at the Australian Open with his victory. The 36-year-old is bidding for his 20th major title in Melbourne, and his 96th overall.

"It felt pretty fast out there tonight," Federer said. "That's how it also felt last year. When you do serve well and connect well on shots, you get rewarded for it."

Federer will face Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany in the second round.

Bedene drops to 0-6 lifetime at the Australian Open.
