Dominic Thiem has become just the third player in history to defeat Rafael Nadal on clay today in Madrid. The Austrian’s 7-5, 6-3 victory sets up a semifinal with South Africa’s Kevin Anderson.

Number of winners that Thiem struck in the match, to just 12 for Nadal. Thiem finished up with 29 winners, 28 UFE. Nadal finished wi 12 winners, 29 UFE.

Kevin Anderson finally reached his first Masters 1000 semifinal and improved to 1-10 lifetime in Masters 1000 quarterfinals with a win over Dusan Lajovic.

The lifetime record of Kiki Bertens on clay after she defeated Caroline Garcia in straight sets on Thursday. Clay is most definitely her best surface. Bertens will climb to a career-high ranking of 15 by reaching the final and could reach No.12 with a title.

Nadal’s 14-match winning streak comes to a close, along with his run of 50 consecutive sets and 21 consecutive match wins on clay.

The Spaniard also saw the end of his run of 30 straight sets won. That streak matched his career-high from 2012.

As a result of Nadal’s loss, Roger Federer will return to No.1 in the rankings next week. But Federer shouldn't get to comfortable. Nadal can recapture the top spot ahead of Roland Garros with a title at Rome.

Federer will begin his 309th week at No.1 (most all-time) while Nadal stops temporarily at 173 weeks at No.1 (fifth-most all-time).

Number of consecutive wins earned by Petra Kvitova. The 28-year-old Czech has now won 10 or more matches multiple times this season (also won 14 in a row from St. Petersburg R1 to Indian Wells R3). Kvitova owns an impressive 23-7 record in finals (Bertens is 5-1 in finals).

Bertens is attempting to become the second unseeded Madrid champion, after Aravane Rezaï in 2010.
