Zverev improved to 2-2 lifetime against his 34-year-old compatriot by saving two of three break points and converting four of six in the 71-minute encounter. After dropping the opener in his second-round match with Yannick Hanfmann, Zverev won the final eight sets he contested at Munich.

Zverev needed to save two break points from 2-3, 15-40 in the first set but then proceeded to reel off the final games of the set to take the opener.

Kohlschreiber and Zverev exchanged breaks early in the second set but again it was the 21-year-old who rolled to the finish, winning the final three games to improve to 21-7 on the season and 12-3 lifetime at Munich.
