The second-seeded Zverev will face seventh-seeded American John Isner next.

Isner edged Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas, 6-7 (9), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4).

Isner scored his first win in four meetings with Zverev in the Miami Open final last month.

The 21-year-old German commanded today's match with a blistering serve.

Zverev served 73 percent, won 82 percent of his first-serve points, 83 percent of his second-serve points and lost a total of just eight points on serve.

Zverev broke to open the second set.

The Rome champion appeared to singe the back edge of the line and went on to break again for 4-1.

The world No. 3 closed in 69 minutes, raising his record to 23-7 on the season.

Zverev is bidding for his fifth semifinal of the season.
