Alexander Zverev took a close-fought opening set and turned it into a blowout in Saturday's second men's singles semifinal at the Mutua Madrid Open. The German rallied past 19-year-old Denis Shapovalov, winning seven games on the trot to go from 3-4 in the first set to 6-4, 4-0 (he actually won 21 of 25 points at one stretch), and finished his 6-4, 6-1 victory winning nine of the final ten games.

21-year-old Zverev is into his fourth Masters 1000 final of his career and second of 2018. The German improves to 25-7 on the season and 12-2 on clay.

He needed just 57 minutes to dispatch Shapovalov for the second time in two career meetings. Zverev converted all four of his break points and dropped only nine points on serve, winning 23 of 26 first-serve points.

The second-seeded German will face Dominic Thiem for the fifth time in Sunday’s final. Thiem holds the 4-1 lifetime edge, including 3-0 on clay.

Despite the difficult loss for Shapovalov, the week was a big success. He became the youngest player to ever reach the semifinal in Madrid on his debut at the event.
