Defending champion GarbiΓ±e Muguruza edged Russia’s Margarita Gasparyan 6-3 6-7(1) 6-2 and set a clash with France’s Kristina Mladenovic.
Mladenovic eased past Greta Arn of Hungary and owns a 2-0 lifetime record against Muguruza.
"We’ve known [each other] since we’re very young, in juniors and stuff," Muguruza said of Mladenovic, according to WTATennis.com. "So it’s going to be a good match, I’ve played her before and it’s a good quarterfinal."
The pair last faced off in a dramatic round of 16 encounter at Roland Garros, won by Mladenovic 6-1 3-6 6-3.
Victoria Azarenka defeated Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan 6-3 6-2 to set a quarterfinal clash with four-time champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, while Angelique Kerber knocked off Karolina Muchova 6-3 6-4 to book a last eight encounter with Kirsten Flipkens.
