After dealing with shoulder pain for the last year, Maria Sharapova has undergone a small surgery to rectify pain that she was experiencing while playing.

The Russian posted an Instagram story saying that she had pulled out of the Miami Open and adding that she had the procedure last week and would need a “few weeks to heal.”

"As many of you know, I have struggled with shoulder pain since last summer. For ten weeks post US Open, I focused on getting my rotator cuff and scapula strong to support a surgically repaired fraying tendon and a small labrum tear,” she posted. “Although my shoulder got strong, it didn't help the pain on impact."

"After a few different opinions in a few different countries, last week I had a small procedure done which will take a few weeks to heal,” Sharapova added. "Although this has been a very long process, I am incredibly committed to getting back strong and more importantly without the pain I was playing with at the beginning of the year."

The 31-year-old is currently ranked 29 in the world and has a record of 6-2 on the season. She pulled out of her third tournament of the season at St. Petersburg due to the injury and has not played since.
