The WTA’s 2019 is done and dusted and at Tennis Now we are planning to review the season’s best moment and best individual performances this month. But for now we’d like to start by breaking down the 2019 campaign by the numbers….
11,307,587 Amount of prize money earned by Ashleigh Barty after her $4.42 million for winning the WTA Finals at Shenzhen was factored in. That amount is the second highest single-season prize money figure in WTA history, behind only Serena Williams’ $12,385,572 in 2013.
14 Barty becomes the 14th woman in history to claim the WTA’s year-end ranking and the first from outside North American and Europe.
4 Barty and Karolina Pliskova finish the year tied for most WTA titles won with four. Four players—Bianca Andreescu, Sofia Kenin, Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka—won three titles in 2019.
28 Kristyna Pliskova’s 28-ace performance in Luxembourg against Monica Puig takes the cake for most aces in a single match. Pliskova’s twin sister Karolina led the tour in total aces with 488 (in 67 matches).
15 Coco Gauff was the WTA’s youngest title winner in 2019. The American took the Linz title this fall to become the youngest WTA player to raise a trophy on tour since 2004 (Vaidisova). Gauff is the ninth-youngest player to ever win a WTA title and the youngest American to win a title since Jennifer Capriati in 1991.
4 Number of WTA players that reached the Roland Garros women’s singles semifinals without having a single Grand Slam final to their name. Ash Barty won the title after defeating Amanda Anisimova in the semis and Marketa Vondrousova in the final. Vondrousova defeated Johanna Konta in her semi. This had not happened in a women’s singles draw at a major since 1978.
4 Number of double bagels earned on the WTA Tour in 2019. Pavlyuchenkova d. Jorovic 6-0 6-0 (Monterrey R16), Ahn d. Bacsinszky 6-0 6-0 (Seoul R1), Sharapova d. Dart 6-0 6-0 (Australian Open R1), Halep d. Kuzmova 6-0 6-0 (Madrid R16).
1999 Before she made history at the US Open, Canada’s Bianca Andreescu made magic at Indian Wells where she became the youngest player to win the title since Serena Williams in 1999.
1, 2 Naomi Osaka became the first player to win her first two major titles in succession when she won this year’s Australian Open, and on the day after the tournament she became the first Asian player to ever hold the No.1 ranking.
4 Number of major finals that Serena Williams has no lost in succession. The 23-time major champ had never lost more than two straight prior to her pregnancy. She has now lost six of her last eight major finals.
12 Ash Barty’s 12 victories (12-6) over Top 10 competition put her at the top of this table. Belinda Bencic (11-8) won 11 against the Top 10 and Bianca Andreescu won her first eight, but lost her final three.
17-3 Naomi Osaka’s .850 winning percentage in three-setters was tops among the ten players with 15 or more three-set wins in 2019, but Belinda Bencic led the tour with 20 three-set wins from 31 deciders.
56 Three players—Ash Barty, Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova hit the 50-win plateau in 2019 and it was Barty who led the tour with 56.
80.1 Percentage of service games won by Serena Williams in her 31 matches in 2019. The American led the tour by a whisker, with Ash Barty coming in second in that all-important category.
2000 Amanda Anisimova became the first player born in the 2000s to reach the round of 16 at a major at this year’s Australian Open. She also became the youngest American to reach the round of 16 in Melbourne since 1993.
5 Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka became the fifth WTA tandem to secure the Sunshine Double in just their third career event together as a team.
9 Number of nations represented in the WTA’s year-end Top 10. The Czech Republic (Kvitova and Pliskova) are the only nation to have two representatives.
1 Speaking of the Czech Republic, Barbora Strycova is the WTA’s year-end World No.1 doubles player.
9 Number of first-time Grand Slam singles winners in the last four seasons. The previous four seasons had six, and the four years before that had two.
12 Number of Grand Slam singles titles that Serena Williams won over the past decade. Williams was one of eleven players that won multiple singles majors titles over the decade. Angelique Kerber won three. Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka, Li Na, Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitová, Garbiñe Muguruza, Naomi Osaka, and Simona Halep all have won two since the beginning of 2010.
6 Number of teenagers that closed 2019 inside the Top 100—World No.5 Bianca Andreescu (19), World No. 22 Dayana Yastremska (19), World No. 24 Amanda Anisimova (18), World No.61 Iga Swiatek (18), World No.68 Coco Gauff (15) and World No. 93 Anastasia Potapova (18).
