Kristie Ahn continues to ride the wave of emotion that took her to the second week of this year’s US Open. The 27-year-old American, who started the season well outside the Top 200 and recently set the record for longest gap between first Grand Slam main draw appearance and first Grand Slam main draw win at Flushing meadows (11 years), has now reached her second tour-level quarterfinal of the season after rallying to defeat Romania’s Ana Bogdan 0-6 6-4 7-6(2).
Ahn, who owns 15 lifetime WTA victories, has notched eight of those since Wimbledon. She will face second-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova in the last eight at Seoul.
Ahn, who made her Top 100 debut last week at 93 in the world, had to rally from 5-3 down in the third set to win in a deciding-set tiebreaker over the Romanian qualifier.
Alexandrova powered past Kristyna Pliskova 3-6 6-3 6-4 on Wednesday in Korea.
Magda Linette (d. Potapova), Kirsten Flipkens (d. Gasparyan) and eight-seeded Yafan Wang (d. Bonaventure) also booked quarterfinal spots on Wednesday in Seoul.
