Go inside the numbers of Day 3 of the Australian Open as we take stock of the key storylines and winning streaks.

Day 3 of the Australian Open was another wild one with five-setters galore, starts in action and some of the biggest upsets of week one. Let’s get to the numbers.

7-2 Coco Gauff’s record at Grand Slams since she made her debut with a win over Venus Williams at Wimbledon. The American sqeaked past Sorana Cirstea on Day 3 to set a third-round clash with Naomi Osaka.

3 Number of games that Gauff took from Osaka in their match in New York. She fell to Osaka 6-3 6-0 but shared a memorable moment with Osaka and the New York fans after the match.


6 Match points needed by Caroline Wozniacki during her 7-5 7-5 victory over Dayana Yastremska on Day 3. The Dane, playing in her last professional tournament, rallied from a double-break down in both sets to earn the victory and set up a third-round clash with Ons Jabeur of Tunisia.

4-0 Gauff’s record in three-setters at the majors, which is pretty good for any age, let alone 15.

11-1 The 2020 record of Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh reached the final at Shenzhen and won the title at Hobart and she has now won her first two main draw matches at majors. She’ll face Ash Barty in the third round.

70 Number of Australian Open wins recorded by Novak Djokovic. The Serb won 43 of 46 first-serve points and took down Japan’s Tatsuma Ito 6-1 6-4 6-2. Djokovic, who is bidding to become the third man in history to win eight or more titles at the same major, will face Yoshihito Nishioka in the third round.


8 The seed next to Matteo Berrettini’s name. The Italian became the highest seed to fall at this year’s Australian Open when he went down to American Tennys Sandgren in five sets on Day 3.

11 Aryna Sabalenka, seeded 11, was the highest seed to fall on the women's side. She went down to Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro in two tight sets.

99 Number of Australian Open wins recorded by Roger Federer after his victory over Filip Krajinovic on Day 3. The Swiss will bid to become the first man to hit 100 Australian Open wins on Day 5 when he faces John Millman.

31 Marin Cilic won his 31st 5-setter on Day 3, defeating France’s Benoit Paire 6-2 6-7(6) 3-6 6-1 7-6(3). The Croatian has now won 9 of his 13 five-setters played at Melbourne Park.

6-0 Serena Williams remained undefeated in 2020 with a 6-2 6-3 triumph over Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek. The 23-time major champion has dropped just eight games through two rounds in Melbourne and will face China’s Wang Qiang in the third round.

6-0 Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova is also undefeated on the season. The Shenzhen champion improved to 6-0 in 2020 with a 6-1 6-3 victory over Barbora Krejcikova. Alexandrova, seeded 25 and aged 25, faces Petra Kvitova in the third round.
