Novak Djokovic started slowly but quickly ramped up his game to waltz to an uncomplicated victory over Diego Schwartzman in his first match at the 2020 Nitto ATP Finals. The Serb locked down a 6-3 6-2 victory to move to the top of the standings of the Tokyo 1970 group, and improved to 6-0 against ATP Finals debutant Schwartzman with the victory.

Schwartzman took the early break on Monday evening at the 02, but Djokovic quickly hit back and made things difficult for the World No.9 the rest of the way. The Serb finished with 26 winners against 14 unforced errors, including 15 forehand winners.

“I think the first set was close,” Schwartzman told reporters. “Was, you know, not for a 6-3. But then he was playing better than me. I mean, it's difficult when you have just a small chance against the No. 1, against Djokovic, and you don't take that chance, you know, it's very difficult.”

Djokovic improves to 40-3 on the season and 37-14 lifetime at the ATP Finals. The five-time champion is bidding to tie Roger Federer on the all-time ATP Finals list by winning his sixth title this year.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC 37-14
BORIS BECKER 36-13

The World No.1 broke serve four times from six break opportunities and won 65 percent of his second serve return points against the Argentine.

Djokovic has now won his first match at the ATP finals 12 consecutive times. The only time he dropped his opener was in 2007 when he lost to David Ferrer in Shanghai on his debut and went 0-3 for the competition.
